The following is a verbatim transcript of a report from the Keighley News of June 17th 1916. But what on earth is going on ? At Kildwick Cricket Field on Saturday a long knock match with ½oz. pot knur took place, for £25 a side, between Bailey of Ingrow, and Williams, of Keighley, 25 rises each off the pin. Williams won with a stroke of 10 score, Bailey's best effort being 8 score 13 yards. W. Michell was the referee. Now if, like me, you're left totally confused by all this you may find Cowling Revives Historic Knur and Spell shines some light on the matter. Shortly after we first posted this piece our good friends at the Keighley and Digital Archive sent us a whole load of information about "knur and spell", which we've formatted into a short article. They also sent us a video, dating from around 1963/4, of a knur-and-spell match involving the Cowling club. It starts with a little bit of information about Cowling, after which it's on to the sporting action. Fascinating stuff. Click here to view.
